I am writing this, in part, as a response to the article, “If I were a Poor Black Kid,” written by Gene Marks.  I don’t have much of a problem with the article, but I do have a problem with the reactions from the liberals and black apologists.  Their responses pretty much explain why “the hood” is in its deplorable condition despite the government dumping billions of dollars into the inner cities.  Having lived for about eight years in the very neighborhood that Marks writes of working in the da`wah (Islamic community activism), and as an Islamic school teacher, and adult literacy instructor, I can speak from experience about the woes—and the solution to life in the ghetto.
