I picked this book up the other evening. When i opened it, this was the first passage i encountered:
REPLACE VICTIMHOOD WITH NEIGHBORHOOD
“Too often the word victim comes up in our discussions. We have all driven through lower economic neighborhoods where there are three or four families living in a single family house, and the music loud enough to wake the …. It seems as if folks living there are trying to drown out their own feelings. This culture is sedating [or more accurately, “mind-numbing”]. It encourages people to see themselves as victims, as being incapable of helping themselves, of feeling anything except totally defeated.
“It is typically the overwhelmed single mothers, absent fathers, and black youth who are most inclined to sedate themselves. They sedate themselves with music or ‘waiting for Jesus’ [as the Christians would have it] to help them, or the government or the lottery or some crack, or if nothing else, a bag of burgers. But there are no solutions here, just a wallowing in sedated victimhood. IT’S ALWAYS SOMEONE ELSE’S FAULT [my emphasis].”
